the moon

Many poems about the moon assume so much about darkness and light. They assume that the darkness is a place to hide, and the light is good. They imagine that the moon knows things, feels things, has intentions towards us.

But I say, maybe you hide in the light, showing your false face to the world. Maybe you know the light on your face makes you seem real to the world's embrace. You turn all of the lights on so the darkness can't tell the world your truth.

I say, maybe the moon does know you. Maybe the moon feels a certain kind of way towards you. Maybe the moon intends for you to run from the darkness it collects throughout the month. And when it is new, so small you can't see it, it sneaks into your room and tells you the truth in the night. What can you do then but hear it?

Go ahead. Light every lantern. No light can shut out the truth.

I've been seen, standing out in the lunar shine, speaking quiet truths out loud.
